You might have noticed your email inbox being flooded with product promotions and advertisements from stores you’ve shopped at online. According to a report from Express UK, this can make you very vulnerable.
Fraudulent emails may deceive you by pretending to be antivirus offers or promotional products, while actually aiming to steal your personal information.
The report highlights that a circulating email claims to protect your device, using phrases like “could be at risk” from “viruses and other malware.” These words encourage you to take preemptive safety measures and click a button taht reads “renew subscription.”.
Clicking this button takes you to another webpage that asks for your bank account details to renew the subscription. By entering your information, you inadvertently share your private data with criminals who can then steal your money and valuables.
Action Fraud has received as many as 4,500 reports urging people to ignore and report these emails.
McAfee issued a statement saying, “Fake messages often include spelling and grammar mistakes, a sense of urgency, and/or questionable links and attachments. If you’ve recived a suspicious email with McAfee branding, do not respond, download attachments, or click links.”.
McAfee explained, “These fake emails use a technique called ‘phishing’. Phishing gets its name because the technique involves ‘fishing’ for passwords, usernames, and other sensitive information. These phishing emails often include links that, if clicked, can introduce malware to your computer.”.
